Matthew Coates
Bariatric SurgeonDr. Matthew Coates, FACS is a board certified general surgeon. He studied molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley as an undergraduate and then attended medical school at the University of Sydney in Australia. He completed his residency training in general surgery at San Joaquin General Hospital. His bariatric scope of practice includes laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic loop duodenal switch, and laparoscopic standard duodenal switch. Along with bariatric Dr. Coates also performs general surgery procedures including but not limited to hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and laparoscopic colon resection. Dr. Coates is an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a candidate member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASM8S), and a member of the Stanislaus Medical Society. In addition, Dr. Coates has interests in other minimally invasive abdominal surgeries, trauma and critical care.
Patrick J. Coates, MD, FACS*
Bariatric SurgeonDr. Patrick Coates is a board certified general surgeon. He graduated from medical school at Autonomous University of Guadalajara in 1978. Dr. Coates completed his general surgery residency through the University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco’s Fresno-Central San Joaquin Valley Medical Education Program at Valley Medical Center in Fresno.
Dr. Coates has extensive experience in general and weight loss surgery. His bariatric scope of practice includes laparoscopic gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, revision and duodenal switch surgeries. Dr. Coates has more than seven years of experience performing weight loss surgery. Dr. Coates is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), American College of Surgery and the Stanislaus Medical Society.

Dr. Coirin served as the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He attended medical school at University of California, Davis and completed his residency in General Surgery at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton, California.
Dr. Coirin is part of multiple professional associations including the American Medical Association, California Medical Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, American Society of Bariatric Surgeons and the International Federation of the Surgery of Obesity.
Andy Huber
General SurgeonAndy Huber, MD is a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery. He is coming from his Advanced GI/MinimaIIy invasive surgery fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Before his fellowship he had completed his general surgery training at San Joaquin General Hospital in French Camp, CA. He grew up in Nebraska and completed his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He then went to medical school in Omaha, NE at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His bariatric scope of practice includes laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery. Along with bariatrics Dr. Huber performs general surgery procedures including but not limited to hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, spleenectomy, and laparoscopic small bowel and colon surgery. Dr. Huber is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Karen Laney
Nurse Coordinator Bariatrics/OrthopedicsKaren is the Bariatric Nurse Coordinator for Doctors Hospital of Manteca. With compassion and care, she helps patient navigate their weight-loss journey and supports them before, during and after surgery. This includes post-surgery hospital visits and guidance for a successful recovery. Karen also teaches monthly weight-loss education classes and leads support groups. She understands that every patient's situation is unique and advocates for the best outcomes.
Karen has been a nurse for 26 years, and has 21 years of experience providing direct care to bariatric patients. In addition, she served on the Bariatrics Committee at Stanford Health Care – Valley Care for 16 years, and has been certified in orthopedics since 2005 and bariatrics since 2007. She also holds a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN).
